My
first encounter with an Akita was in 1981 and one I will always cherish.
I was walking my boys home from school one afternoon when our
youngest son, Josh, who was in kindergarten at the time, yelled out
“Mom, Mom! You have to come see.
There’s a bear with her cubs up here.” At first I just
laughed. You know how
little boys are. I thought
he was teasing me, trying to make run and catch up with him.
But the closer we got, the more it looked like he was telling me
the truth. Here was this
big, brownish-red, bear type animal with all these little cubs running
around. As we got closer,
we realized that it was not a bear but some type of dog.
I had never seen a dog or puppies that looked quite like this
before. They were just beautiful …breathtaking. I was definitely in
awe. The thing that intrigued me the most was that it wasn’t the dam
playing with her puppies, it was the sire.
He was just romping and playing, but so gentle, so sweet and came
up to the fence and let us pet him and the puppies.
He didn’t have a problem with it all.
He was just happy playing with all these puppies.
We stayed there all afternoon just watching them. That’s when
we fell in love with the Akita. That’s when I knew our next dog would
be an Akita. We
bought our first “show quality” Akita, Mariko, in 1983 but didn’t
become active in conformation showing and breeding until several years
later. At the time, we were more interested in obedience training and
having a well-behaved pet than we were in showing or breeding. We
started out competing in obedience. Then our son, Josh, became
interested in Junior Showmanship and that sparked our interest in
conformation showing. The more involved we became, the more we fell in
love with the breed. We
knew we wanted to show but we weren’t sure about breeding.
It took us a long time and a lot of research before we became
involved in the breeding part of it. We wanted to know what was behind
the lines we were basing our foundation on. We wanted to learn the good
points and bad points; health, temperament, structure, etc. After several more years of research and a couple of more Akitas, we became more active in conformation showing and eventually, in breeding. Although we don’t breed very often, when we do, we breed with the intention of keeping something out of the litter that will help improve our breeding program. We breed with definite goals in mind. With every breeding we do, we have specific reasons and things we are striving to accomplish. It is like building blocks; each litter sets the direction we want to build on in the future. We are continually learning and trying our best to improve. Our goal is to hopefully, improve and enhance the breed by producing the best quality we can, not only in type, but in health, structure, and temperament as well.
